My name is Amy Morosini and I live in Moraga, CA with my husband, three boys, 1 dog and 1 bunny rabbit.
In 1997, when I was 27, I fell from a third-floor apartment window and shattered my skull—as well as life as I knew it. I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), compound fracture of my left femur, broke my left hip, both wrists, jaw, suffered severe nerve damage and facial paralysis. I was in the hospital for 2 months and spent the greater part of the next year in rehabilitation. Doctors initially told me I would never walk without assistance again—and, in a sense, they were right. I don't just walk, I run.
For 15 years after my injury, I battled depression and PTSD. I self-medicated with alcohol and food. It wasn't until my husband and I were told that our youngest son had a severe cognitive disability and would need us to care for him for the remainder of our lives. In a desperate effort to get healthy, I switched to a plant-based diet and I did a half-marathon—and I loved it. So I did another. Endurance sports have become my magic pill.
I went back to school and received my NASM-CPT to knowledgeably train myself. I also became a certified Fitness Nutrition Specialist. I now volunteer as a fitness instructor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Martinez, Calif., working with soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with TBIs. They wonder how they’re going to live with PTSD and other TBI issues. I want to show them that if I can make it, so can they.
